How to Stay Emotionally Steady When There's Tension with Your Adult Child

No mom dreams of being in conflict with her child.

We imagine relationships that stay close as our kids grow up. We picture easy conversations, family gatherings, and a bond that deepens over time. When tension, distance, or misunderstanding enters the relationship, it can leave us heartbroken. It can also stir up fear and make us desperate to fix what feels broken.

When emotions take over, we don't always show up as our best selves.

We explain ourselves again and again because we want our child to see our heart. We become defensive because their words sting. We cry because the grief feels too heavy to carry. Sometimes we send one more text hoping it will make everything better.
